Folded like origami on the hillside.
House H uses sharply folded edges to find it’s place on the hillside in Austria. We find it tucked-up next to the original home on this subdivided site with little help from Google maps and sharp images from Bing Maps.
Google has had a rough time with Street View in Austria (and Germany). First Austria fought Google, then Google said “Meh. Austria. Maybe later.” Since 2011 Google has made a few Street View (Ski View?) forays into attractions in Austria, but on a very limited basis. Google currently has no plans for Street View in Austria and Germany.

From the architect:
We do not simply plan buildings. We think about how a house reacts to its surrounding, and the surrounding to the house. Interior life is as important as the environment. We set our hands on every detail from planning to realization.
House H is all through Smartvoll: not only the building itself was designed by us but also the details of the inside space. Natural light in all rooms, fluent room transitions, the entanglement of bathroom and sleeping-area, staged outlooks at nature, a floating carport roof – these characteristics distinguish this project and make it Smartvoll.
Playing with contrasts
Embedding the abundance of the surrounding landscape and the client’s wish for purism: paradoxically the answer was to find in a nearly artificial architecture and interior design. It reinforces nature even more through anorganic shapes and a minimum use of color. From the inside the carport roof seems like a frame, catching the powerful scenery outside.
Saddle roof reloaded
The local authorities demanded a saddle roof – which didn’t take us aback. We stowed the traditional form with new functions. Thus, the saddle roof is not only a roof, it is also a carport, the passage to an old existing pavilion and a pillar-free comfort zone on the inside with a big living, dining and kitchen area.
Old and young: together and on their own
Organizing a connection between the old and the new house and enabling a side-by-side family living, was also part of our request. The new house is now accessible through the entry of the property and the old house can be reached through a staircase right behind the new construction.
Landscape, design and architecture: House H brings together what belongs together.
“I’ve been working together with Smartvoll in the course of different projects for several years. All projects have been realized very professionally, committed and on time. The architectural implementation is not only creative but also meets to the client’s wishes and requirements! We are looking forward to realizing more interesting projects with smartvoll and wish the team further success!“ (Client)
